. Chapter Sixteen .

Shaye

The door slammed shut as Sorin left the dusty old cottage. Shaye hated it here; she had never liked cramped spaces. Atropani had been careless with her housekeeping, cobwebs occupied every corner and bowls were left dirty from spells she had used them for. Now the rancid stench of the Orc filled the small room, making it difficult to take a breath.

“I may not see your future, dear, but I see your past so very clearly.” The chair across from Shaye creaked under the woman as she sat. She extended withered hands to her. Shaye hesitated, taking the seat across from her and giving her hands to the eerie old woman. The moment their hands touched, the fire went out, leaving the small cabin in pitch darkness. Shaye heard Atropani gasp, the sound of her own fast-paced breathing accompanying it.

Atropani hissed, “I sense much fear in you. Your past lingers in your dreams. Forgiveness will not come easily for you and the darkness that surrounds you will overtake you if you are not careful. I have seen it before.” Grief was plain on her face.

“With the girl you spoke of.”

“Yes. She tried desperately to fight the storm within her. For a while, it worked, and she was happy. But she made many mistakes along the way. Mistakes I hope you will be able to avoid. My advice to you, Shaye Wistari, is to not trust honeyed words from men. Should you allow yourself to be manipulated, should you give in to the anger in your heart, then yours will be a legacy of darkness.”

Shaye tore her hands away from the Fate. “You said you couldn’t see the future.” She stood, stumbling, and grabbed a chair to steady herself. She was finding it difficult to navigate her way in the dark, unfamiliar cottage.

Atropani laughed, “I cannot see your future, but I can make predictions based on what I have seen in the past. Darkness has been around since the beginning, girl, and it shows itself often. History teaches us through the mistakes and triumphs of others.” There was an edge to her voice now as, she added, “Heed my words, child, or all of Asterion will suffer for it.”

A sudden gust of wind threw open the door and pushed Shaye out into the garden. She could hear the hag cackling behind her as the door shut. It was late evening by now, and the sun was hidden behind a cluster of trees, leaving a chill in the air.

The men looked exhausted and worried. Sorin especially, as he gripped a sword in his hand. All Shaye wanted was to put as much distance between her and this place as she could. She rushed past Sorin without a word and mounted Finn, ready to lead the way north. Sorin took her lead and called the men to do the same.

No one asked her about what had happened once Sorin had left her alone with Atropani. Sorin rode up next to her and Finn kicked his back leg out at Sorin’s horse.
